In a major boost for rural healthcare, over 1,500 residents of Bunkure Local Government Area in Kano State have received free specialized dental care. The outreach, championed by the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, targets a community that has long struggled with the high costs and limited accessibility of oral health services.

Dental care is often the “forgotten pillar” of primary healthcare, especially in rural areas where the cost of a single procedure can exceed a family’s weekly budget. The data from this outreach provides a snapshot of the community’s primary needs.
The intervention, held at the Bunkure Primary Health Care Centre, included:
- Specialized Care: Consultations with dental surgeons and therapists.
- Preventive Education: Oral hygiene workshops for families.
- Resource Kits: Distribution of dental kits (brushes/toothpaste) to sustain long-term hygiene.
The Wider Empowerment Context
Dr. Mariya Mahmoud noted that this Bunkure outreach is part of a broader “State-Wide Empowerment Programme” designed to touch all 44 Local Government Areas and 484 wards in Kano State. This modular approach to health—moving from one LGA to another—ensures that even the most “last-mile” residents are not left behind.
