In a significant boost for distance learning in the region, Al-Muhibbah Open University has matriculated 365 students for the 2025/2026 academic session. This second matriculation ceremony marks a pivotal moment for the institution, which is rapidly positioning itself as a resilient alternative to traditional schooling in an era of security and logistical challenges.
The Data: Triple-Digit Growth in One Year
The university’s growth trajectory between its first and second sessions reveals a high demand for flexible higher education. The institution has expanded not only its student population but also its academic infrastructure.

Strategic Support: The Bauchi Scholarship Model
A key driver behind this year’s numbers is the intervention of the Bauchi State Government. Through the State Scholarship Board, the government sponsored 200 students, accounting for nearly 55% of the new intake.
Acting Vice-Chancellor, Asst. Prof. Ibrahim Hassan, described this as a “model for other stakeholders,” highlighting how public-private partnerships can bridge the educational gap for those who cannot access conventional brick-and-mortar universities.
Education as a Security Strategy
As a data journalist and educator, I find the VC’s emphasis on ODL as a “safe alternative” particularly relevant. In areas where banditry or kidnapping may disrupt physical attendance, the university’s digital model ensures that:
- Learning is Uninterrupted: Education continues regardless of physical security risks.
- E-Resources are Central: Students are urged to utilize the university’s e-resources and online discussion platforms to enhance their learning.
- Quality is Certified: 12 out of 14 initial programs have received full NUC accreditation, with the Nursing program also gaining full accreditation from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
The Analyst’s View: Education for the “Last Mile”
The Chancellor, Dr. Aisha Bala Mohammed, emphasized that the university is committed to quality regardless of “location or circumstances.” By scaling from 14 to 20 undergraduate programs and adding 5 NUC-approved Master’s programs, Al-Muhibbah is moving toward a comprehensive “Last Mile” educational delivery system.
