Despite being the country’s second-largest power source, the hydropower sector is currently hindered by a massive execution gap, with 58 percent of publicly funded dam projects meant for generation remaining stalled or completely abandoned.
Hydropower currently accounts for 30.1 percent of Nigeria’s total electricity supply. However, the inability to complete these “frozen” projects is preventing the country from diversifying away from its heavy reliance on thermal (gas) generation, which currently dominates nearly 70 percent of the grid.
