In a significant move to bridge the gap between agricultural research and actual farm output, the Foundation for Sustainable Smaller Solutions (FSSS), backed by the Gates Foundation, has launched a landmark initiative to provide Nigerian farmers with verified seed performance data. By shifting from “paper yields” to real-world field evidence across 13 states, the project targets a 40% boost in productivity, ensuring that the seeds planted in regions like the North West and North East are scientifically matched to their specific soil and climate conditions.

ABUJA, NIGERIA — In a strategic move to reverse declining agricultural productivity, the Foundation for Sustainable Smaller Solutions (FSSS), with support from the Gates Foundation, has launched a landmark project titled “Using Performance Data to Promote Better Seed Varieties in Nigeria.”

The initiative aims to solve a historic pain point for Nigerian farmers: the gap between “paper yields” (what researchers promise) and “field yields” (what farmers actually harvest).

The Data Strategy: Testing Under Real Conditions

Unlike traditional lab tests, this project utilizes multi-year performance data gathered directly from the field.

Key Project Metrics:

• The 40% Factor: Research shows that seed quality accounts for 30% to 40% of total productivity outcomes.
• 3-Year Evaluation: Varieties are being assessed over a three-year cycle through head-to-head comparisons.
• Crop Focus: The initial rollout focuses on Rice (the entry crop for 2026), with Maize and Cowpea to follow in subsequent phases.
• Geographic Reach: The study covers 12 to 13 States across all major Nigerian agro-ecological zones (NE, NW, NC, SE, and SW).

Why “Real Performance” Matters for Business

Isaiah Gabriel, Executive Director of FSSS, noted that farmers often struggle not from a lack of effort, but from a lack of trusted information. For the business-minded farmer:

• Risk Mitigation: Data helps choose varieties that are resilient to specific regional threats like flooding or disease.
• Market Alignment: For millers and aggregators, the project identifies which seeds deliver the grain quality and appearance demanded by the market.
• Policy Support: The data will be fed into the national variety database to guide government subsidies and seed company investments.

This project represents a shift toward Precision Agriculture. By comparing released and unreleased varieties under real-world stress (pests, erratic rainfall, soil quality), the FSSS is building a “Consumer Reports” for Nigerian farmers.
