Nigeria’s Climate Resilience Revolution
How a €175 million partnership with the European Investment Bank is fighting erosion, restoring land, and building climate-smart communities across 23 states
In May 2025, Nigeria launched the Nigeria Climate Adaptation–Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP-EIB)—a landmark €175 million initiative co-funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Federal Government. The project will directly benefit 750,000 Nigerians by 2030 through erosion control, land restoration, and climate-resilient infrastructure.

Building on Legacy: From NEWMAP to NEWMAP-EIB
NEWMAP-EIB builds on the success of the original NEWMAP (2013–2022), which was supported by the World Bank and tackled gully erosion nationwide. The new phase—approved by the EIB in 2020—was officially launched in May 2025.
Aligned with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the project prioritizes climate-smart cities, watershed restoration, and community-driven solutions to land degradation.
The Federal Government has already released ₦750 million as its first counterpart contribution, with a second tranche in process.
