LAGOS, NIGERIA — Airtel Nigeria has announced a massive scale-up of its digital infrastructure, adding over 2,200 new network sites and expanding its fiber-optic footprint by 25 percent. Disclosed during the 2026 media roundtable in Lagos, the investment aims to stay ahead of Nigeria’s rapidly accelerating data consumption.
The Data: Breaking Down the $1.6B Bet
Airtel’s aggressive rollout strategy focuses on three pillars: capacity, coverage, and resilience.
- The Site Surge: Airtel added 2,242 new sites since December 2023, bringing its national total to 16,711 sites. This represents a 15.5% increase in its physical network footprint.
- Fiber Expansion: Following a doubling of capital expenditure, the company is ramping up its fiber backbone by 25%, targeting inter-state links and deeper penetration into major cities.
- 4G & 5G Dominance: 99% of Airtel sites are now 4G-enabled. Furthermore, 5G deployments have doubled in the last quarter, targeting the top 20 Nigerian cities.
Critical Infrastructure: Beyond the Lagos Hub
In a move that significantly boosts Nigeria’s cybersecurity and network stability, Airtel is launching a second internet breakout point in Kwa Ibo, Akwa Ibom State.
- The “Lagos Risk”: Currently, Nigeria relies heavily on a single breakout location in Lagos.
- The Solution: The new Akwa Ibom breakout, linked to the 2Africa submarine cable, ensures that if the Lagos hub faces a disruption, the rest of the country remains connected.
The “Direct-to-Cell” Revolution
Airtel is also tackling the “Digital Divide” in deep rural areas through a partnership with Starlink. This direct-to-cell capability provides basic connectivity to remote locations without the need for expensive terrestrial towers, ensuring that even the most underserved communities are brought into the digital economy.
